Circulation Desk

Staff at this desk will check out materials to you and page reserve items for courses in business and graduate courses in economics. Some investment advisory services and periodicals must be requested at this desk. Requests for materials in storage at the Northern Regional Library Facility (NRLF) can also made at the Circulation Desk.

Circulation/Reserve Policies & Procedures

Circulation loan periods

Books - semester loan
Journals, bound and unbound - 1 day
Reserves - 2 hours--Library Use Only, 1 day, 7 day (specified by professor)
Reference books - Library use only
Microforms - Library use only

Library borrowing cards

UCB students - use your registration/ID card
UCB faculty - use your Berkeley faculty ID
UCB staff - use your Staff ID card or a library card issued by the Doe Library Privileges Desk
Non-affiliated - inquire about borrowing privileges at the Doe Library Privileges Desk

Presentation of your library borrowing card when checking out materials signals an agreement on your part to abide by library rules and procedures for using and returning items. You will be held responsible for all materials until they have been returned.

Recalls

Items charged out to another borrower may be recalled by presenting your library card and the title or call number of the item you need at the Circulation Desk. The borrower having the item is emailed or mailed a postcard requesting its return within 7 days. You will be notified by email or postcard when the item is available. If you do not pick up the item by the date indicated, it will be given to the next person on the hold list or returned to the book stacks.

Recalls depend on the cooperation of all library borrowers to make the system work. If you receive a recall notice, please return the item immediately.

Course reserves

The Thomas J. Long Business & Economics Library houses course reserve materials for all undergraduate and graduate courses in the Haas School of Business and the graduate courses for the Department of Economics. Materials are placed on reserve by faculty who select the titles and determine the loan periods.

To identify materials on reserve for a specific course, use GLADIS and type f co (BUSI or ECON) (course number).
For example: f CO busi 250

Renewals and inventories

You may renew materials charged out to you through GLADIS, available at any library terminal, or remotely from any computer connected to GLADIS. For instructions on online renewals and online inventories, type help ren or help inv from the GLADIS online catalog, or see the Online Inventory and Renewal section in the Guide to GLADIS (PDF).

If the item you are trying to renew has been recalled by another borrower, you will not be allowed to renew it online. Instead, please return the item to the library immediately. If you have problems, the Circulation Desk staff are available to assist you.

Overdue materials

Overdue library materials cause you to be autoblocked by the library's automated circulation system. This means that you will not be able to check out or renew materials from any campus library until the autoblock is removed by returning your overdue materials.

If an overdue item is not returned, you will be billed a minimum of $150 per item, or more, if the value of the item exceeds $150. Please be aware that many single issues of journals cost $250 or more to replace.

After hours book return

An after hours book return is located outside the 3rd level entrance to the Haas Student Services Wing, just outside the doors to the lobby between the library and the computer center. This book return may be used to return library materials when the library is closed.

Circulation service telephone number

The telephone number for the Circulation desk is 642-0370. Library staff's first priority is to help people currently in the library. Therefore, they may not always be able to answer this telephone.

If you call during open hours and receive a recorded message, this indicates that available staff are busy helping people in the library. Please try this number again in a few minutes.

Copy machines/printers

Copy machines/printers are located in separate service centers on the entry and lower levels of the library and may be operated with either an Equitrac card or with coins. An Equitrac card dispenser is located in the entry level copy center. Microfiche and microfilm reader/printers are located on both levels of the library and operate only with cards. All of the library's copiers and printers are self-service.
