  Introduction

The Earth Sciences and Map Library currently has over 2,500 CD-ROMs and DVDs, containing data in several disciplines. Two CD-ROM/DVD workstations are available for patron use. (This listing does not include maps which have been scanned in-house; for a list of our digitized topographic map sets, see http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/EART/topo.html.)

  Climate Data

Año Nuevo to Santa Cruz, California : a photographic tour of the coastline / by Henry Chezar and Florence L. Wong. Contains over 500 overlapping, high-resolution digital images of California coastline taken by digital camera connected to global positioning system receiver, to illustrate coastal geology adjacent to part of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

Asian monsoon & data assimilation A project to provide a research-quality data set suitable for the study of general Earth science problems such as climate variability and atmospheric chemistry, in Quicktime movies throughout the CD.

Canadian daily climate data, temperature and precipitation. Eastern Canada : CDCD = Donnees climatiques quotidiennes canadiennes, temperatures et precipitations. Est du Canada : DCQC Contains daily temperature, precipitation, and snow-on-the-ground data for 3,338 locations in Ontario, Quebec, the Atlantic Provinces, Yukon Territory, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. Data is available for the complete period of record for each station until the end of 2000.

Canadian daily climate data, temperature and precipitation. Western Canada : CDCD = Donnees climatiques quotidiennes canadiennes, temperatures et precipitations. Ouest du Canada : DCQC Contains daily values of temperature (maximum, minimum, and mean), precipitation (rain, snow, and total precipitation), and snow depth for Western Canada.

Climate atlas of the United States, version 1 Disk 1, Contiguous 48 states includes 737 color maps of climatic elements such as temperature, precipitation, snow, wind, pressure, etc. to portray the climate of the contiguous U.S. for period of 1961-1990.

Climate atlas of the United States, version 2 Version 2 of Climate atlas of U.S. features climate maps of all 50 states. It replaces the CD atlas published in 2000 and contains 2,023 color maps of climatic elements such as temperature, precipitation, etc., to portray climate of U.S. for period 1961-1990.

Climate change presentation kit Consists of an auto-start slide presentation: "Is global warming happening?" and notes.

Climatic atlas of the Barents Sea 1998 : temperature, salinity, oxygen (International ocean atlas series ; v. 1). Shows time and space distribution of 74,256 ocean stations (temperature, salinity, and oxygen) occupied in the Barents Sea during 1898-1993.

Climatology interdisciplinary data collection (CIDC) (NASA Goddard DAAC science data series) Includes monthly means of over 70 physical parameters--Land, Ocean, Sun, Cryosphere, Biosphere, Atmosphere--for basic research and teaching purposes. Data viewable with a Web browser.

Cooperative Summary of the Day TD3200 -- Period of record through 1993. This data set is a compilation of daily observations from cooperative observers in the U.S., its Caribbean and Pacific Island territories, and Puerto Rico. Includes various evaporation, precipitation, snow, and air/soil temperature elements. Period of record falls between 1850s to 1993. Data files are in ASCII.

Cooperative summary of the day : United States, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, and Pacific Islands : TD3200 -- 1994 and 1995 data / [produced by] National Climatic Data Center. Includes air and soil temperatures, rainfall, snowfall, and evaporation elements as ASCII data files.

Digital data sets of Depth-duration frequency of precipitation for Oklahoma (USGS Open-file report ; 99-463) Precipitation gage stations were used with at least 10 years of data, from which surfaces were interpolated and contour lines derived to produce maps for Water resources investigation report 99-4232, Depth-duration frequency. EPA's state and local climate change outreach kit provides everything state and local leaders need to inform the public about global warming impacts and solutions: a slideshow and script; camera-ready background pieces; order information for brochures and exhibits; a glossary of climate change terms; a list of videos on climate change; useful Internet links; and more than 100 information sheets.

GHCN Global Climate. Provides global data for weather stations by month and year,from the inception of the weather station through 2001. Includes total precipitation, mean temperature, mean sea-level pressure,and mean station-level pressure.

GHCN global daily 2005 Database contains daily data values of precipitation, maximum temperature, and minimum temperature collected at 33,000 stations worldwide. The daily data categories are WMO Region/Continent, Country, Station, Parameter Index, and daily data.

Global AVHRR-derived land climatology Disc 1. Monthly mean normalized difference index, precipitable water index, Calibrated albedos from advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) Channels 1 & 2, Calibrated temperatures from AVHRR channels 4 & 5, and Standard deviations of the same parameters -- disc 2. Ancillary data, including resampled selections from Disc 1.

Global Change Data Base Vol. 2: Experimental Calibrated Global Vegetation Index from NOAA's Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer, 1985-1991. Contains Kevin Gallo's experimental Global Vegetation Index, in 2 versions: biweekly and month directory. GIS compatible with IDRISI, GRASS and other GIS softwares.

Global Daily Climatology Network global daily 2003 (GDCN) GDCN global daily is a database that contains daily data values of precipitation, maximum temperature, and minimum temperature collected at 32,857 stations worldwide. The daily data, for which the source agency is the National Climatic Data Center, date from 1840 to 2001 and are sorted by WMO region, country, station, parameter, year, and month and are arranged on 10 regional CDs. Also included are EarthInfo GDCN global daily database guide and CD_2 reference guide.

Global Daily Summary : temperature and precipition 1977-1991. Lists 24 hour maximums and minimums for global temperatures and precipitation. Lists precipitation by precipitation type with 24 hours totals.

Global Historical Fields Contains climate data from 1899 to 1994.

Global gridded upper air statistics, 1980-1995 ASCII data files of long-term monthly means and standard deviations of the period, represented on a 2.5 degree global grid at 15 standard pressure levels. Mean and standard deviation values were compiled for sea level pressure, wind speed, air temperature, dew point, height and density.

Global Precipitation Climatology Project : July 1987 - December 1997, precipitation analyses. GPCP is a component of WCRP Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment(GEWEX). Established 1986 to provide monthly mean precipitation data, it merges infrared and microwave satellite estimates of precipitation with rain gauge data from more than 30,000 stations. All its member countries contributed to this analyses.

Global tropical - extratropical cyclone climatic atlas contains all global historic tropical storm track data available for 5 tropical storm basins. Periods of record varies for each basin, 1870's to 1992. Northern Hemispheric extratropical storm track data is included for 1965-1992. Tropical track data includes time, position, and storm stage, with maximum wind and central pressure when available.

Global tropical/extratropical cyclone climatic atlas. Version 2.0 contains data for 6 tropical storm basins for the period 1800-1995, and extratropical track data for the northern hemisphere for 1965-1995.

Hourly United States weather observations 1990-1995contains viewing software and data for major weather stations throughout the U.S.

Integrated surface hourly weather observations : ISHWO Database is composed of worldwide surface weather observations from about 20,000 stations, collected and stored from sources such as Automated Weather Network (AWN), Global Telecommunications System (GTS), Automated Surface Observing system (ASOS), and data keyed from paper forms. Vols. 1/4-9/12 contain retrospective data for the years 1995-1999; vols. 13/16- contain annual data for the years 2000-.

International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project, central archive, catalog of data and products Updates to the CD-ROM catalog are available online.

International station meteorological climate summary. ISMCS CD-ROM contains detailed climate summaries for 640 world wide stations and 5434 of the World Wide Airfield Summary stations as "fillers" in sparse regions. The detailed summaries contain up to 40 separate tables with 1 to 108 sub-tables. The data are accessible by geographically panning and zooming to a given area on a global display or by directly selecting a station from one of seven identifiers, such as name, WMO no., or country. The data includes surface air temperature, humidity, wind and precipitation.

International station meteorological climate summary Ver. 4.0 Interactive world climatic atlas, data to Septmeber 1996.

International surface weather observations, 1982-1997 Includes hourly and/or synoptic climatic data for approximately 1500 international stations; provides worldwide coverage of city locations. Files are in zipped ASCII format.

Master Weather Message Library (MWML) is a listing of all the bulletins that can be relayed in-tact over the Automated Weather Network (AWN).

MM4 -- 1990 Meteorological Data, jointly produced by the National Climatic Data Center and the Atmosphere Sciences Modeling Division, provides access to modeled hourly radiosonde data, by month for 1990 for a grid with 80 Km horizontal resolution covering the U.S. and adjacent portions of Canada and Mexico. Wind, temperature, dewpoint, and height data are available for 23 atmospheric levels.

NCDC 15 minute precipitation. Provides rapid access to the entire period of record for the climatological data (1971 on) contained in the NCDC TD-3240 and TD-3260 precipitation files. Information may be obtained in ASCII tabular, Lotus, dBASE, NCDC, or binary formats.

NCDC first order summary of the day. Contains daily selected elements of observations taken at stations located worldwide and operated by the National Weather Service (NWS), U.S. Air Force (Air Weather Service), U.S. Navy (Navy Weather Service), and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). A complete range of meteorological parameters are recorded, generally for the 24-hour period midnight to midnight.

NCDC hourly precipitation. Hourly and 15 minute observations of precipitation in Western United States. Summary of daily observations, storm activity, daily events, and hourly events.

NCDC summary of the day. Contains daily observations of precipitation, snowfall, maximum temperature, minimum temperature, and evaporation for the United States during the past 100 years.

NCDC surface airways. Hourly values of 15 meteorological parameters in the TD-3280 (surface airways hourly) and TD-3281 (airways solar radiation) databases of the National Climatic Data Center for the entire U.S. Parameters include wind speed and direction, altimeter setting, cloud ceiling height, horizontal visibility, opaque sky cover, dry, wet bulb and dew point temperatures, relative humidity, global and direct solar radiation, station pressure, and present weather. NOAA environmental buoy data A CD-ROM set containing meteorological, wave spectra, and oceanographic data from moored buoys and coastal marine automated network stations operated by the NOAA National Data Buoy Center. NOAA KLM user's guide Describes the spacecraft characteristics, orbital considerations, sensor package, real-time data systems for local users, tracking procedures to acquire data from real-time transmission system sensors, ingest and preprocessing, calibration, and formats for level 1b data and operational products of the NOAA-K through NOAA-M polar orbiter series of satellites.

NOAA/NASA Pathfinder climate data Contains 7 data sets from NOAA/NASA Pathfinder Program. The major portion of the data is of one- by one-degree gridded files with many parameters, most of which are climate-related and can be used for analysis and research. NOAA weather charts Contains A. Surface and upper air weather charts; B. Initial analysis and forecast charts; C. Tropical strip/precipitation and observed weather charts.

Ozone data for the world Data is also available online.

Ozone monitoring, mapping, and public outreach : delivering real-time ozone information to your community. Shows how to monitor ground-level ozone and how to distribute real-time data about ground-level ozone. Using MapGen, maps can be created to show ozone concentrations. Shows how to develop programs to communicate information about ozone to communities.

Pacific exploratory mission in the north western Pacific Contains tropospheric data derived from a NASA mission conducted in the north western Pacific September-October 1991 and February-March 1994.

Periodical publications / The National Climatic Data Center. Contains the following publications of the Center: Storm data; and: Monthly climatic data for world; as well as the regional editions of: Local climatological data; Climatological data; and: Hourly precipitation data.

Probabilities of temperature extremes in the U.S.A.(USGS Digital Data Series ; DDS-38) Provides capability to estimate temperature probabilites for 332 locations in 50 states. It also gives a capability to examine how temperature probabiliites might change, given a monthy forecast of above and below normal temperatures, or even to examine climate change scenarios.

Radiosonde Data of North America : 1946-1993. Produced by the Forecast Systems Laboratory, Boulder, Colorado and NCDC, contains data files only.

Remote sensing tutorial online handbook, by Nicholas M. Short, Sr. Tutorial provides detailed understanding of utility of remote sensing data in monitoring Earth's surface and atmosphere. Aims to develop skills in interpreting visual displays and data sets both by direct inspection and by computer processing.

SAFARI 2000 : Southern African Regional Science Initiative. volume 1 "The archive ... contains remote sensing products from the AVHRR, SeaWiFS, and TOMS spacecraft sensors; in situ atmospheric and meteorological data; and regional subsets of published global databases. In addition, this archive includes documents on the SAFARI 2000 Initiative, the Data Policy, and information on accessing additional data and project resources."

Stratospheric aerosol and gas experiment II : Sage II The Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE) II was launched aboard the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite in October 1984 during STS-41-G. The instrument provides high quality measurements of ozone, nitrogen dioxide, water vapor, and multi-wavelength aerosol extinction from the mid-troposphere to as high as the lower mesosphere.

TOMS ozone image data : 1978-1991. A product of NASA Upper Atmosphere Research Program, with data provided by the Goddard Ozone Processing Team. CD-ROM includes data and images.

Transport & atmospheric chemistry near the equator-Atlantic, GTE Trace-A, September-October 1992 A comprehensive investigation of the chemical composition, transport, and chemistry of the atmosphere in the south Atlantic Ocean and the adjacent South American and African continents. Information on radiation, clouds, aerosols, and tropospheric chemistry.

Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission : monitoring the global tropics for 3 years and beyond Contains resources compiled to highlight key accomplishments of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) since launch. Includes PowerPoint presentation that provides an overview of TRMM and significant science results; a set of data movies or animation; and listing of current TRMM-related literature.

United States snow climatology Includes data files, documentation files, and user friendly table files; shown as 1) NORMALS; 2) Snow climatology for stations in COOP network to support NWS real-time snow operations; and 3) RETURN statistics to support FEMA snow disaster declarations activities.

U.S. Divisional and Station Climatic Data and Normals, vol. 1, 1994. Contains collection of DOS ASCII data files and documents pertaining to U.S. normals and byproducts of the normals from archive files at NOAA's National Climatic Data Center. Variables include temperature, precipitation, degree days and Palmer Drought Index. Current normals period is 1961-1990; earlier data are provided for comparison and research. No software or extraction routines included.

US hourly precipitation data Includes hourly and precipitation observations (1990-1998) at continental U.S. sites, Hawaii, Alaska, U.S. Caribbean Islands, and U.S. Pacific Islands.

U.S. Navy marine climatic atlas of the World. Contains analysis and display software for climatological averages of atmospheric and oceanographic data observed within 1 an 5 degree grid areas covering the global marine environment.

U.S. Navy marine climatic atlas of the world : including Mediterranean severe weather port guides, Ver. 1.0 Analysis and display software for climatological averages of atmospheric and oceanographic data observed within 1 and 5 degree grid areas covering the global marine environment.

USGS daily values. Contains daily observations of streamflow data from more than 21,000 stations throughout the United States. The data categories are State, Station, Summary, Daily, Extreme, and Report.

USGS peak values. Contains annual peak streamflow data and associated gage height measurements taken at over 26,000 stations throughout the United States, for the period covering 1852 to present. The data categories are State, Station, Annual, Partial, Extreme, Ranking, and Report.

USGS quality of water--ground. Contains more than 16 million water quality observations taken at over 262,000 analysis sites throughout the United States. The data categories are State, HUC, County, Parameter, Station, Analysis, and Observation. 6,120 water quality parameters include organics, inorganics, metals, and pesticides.

USGS quality of water--surface Contains more than 52 million water quality observations taken at over 81,000 analysis sites throughout the United States. The data categories are State, HUC, County, Parameter, Station, Analysis, and Observation. 6,120 water quality parameters include organics, inorganics, metals, and pesticides.

World Climate Disc : Global climatic change data. Contains historical global climate data including: mean monthly surface air temperature for both stations and aggregate averages for 5 x 5-degree grid boxes, monthly precipitation totals, mean monthly sea-level pressure, and global topographical relief data. Data may be mapped using 5 different map projections or displayed as tables and graphs.

World Weather Disc.Massive meteorological database that describes the climate of the Earth both recently and during the past few hundred years.

1961-1990 global climate normals (CLINO) DOS ASCII files which describe the 1961-1990 global standard climate normals for over 4000 stations worldwide computed by more than 135 countries and territories as part of the World Meteorological Organization CLINO activity

Arctic and Antarctic sea ice data : 1972-1994 contains ASCII data files of weekly ice data provided in the international Sea Ice Grid (SIGRID) structure of .25 degree latitude grid, and includes total ice concentration, stage of development (thickness) and form of ice for the complete period of record.

Atlas of GLORIA sidescan-sonar imagery of the Exclusive Economic Zone of the United States: EEZ-View (USGS Open-file report ; 97-540) Contains GLORIA sidescan imagery of all deep-water portions of EEZ of the U.S. mapped during 8 years of data collection, accompanied by tutorial overviews of plate tectonics, remote sensing with GLORIA, and highlights of features from the 11 geographic areas. Interactive links to word definitions, enlarged images, shaded-relief images, and geologic maps make this CD-ROM an attractive tool for teaching.

Atlas of temperature-salinity frequency distributions, North Atlantic Ocean (NOAA atlas NESDIS ; 55). Presents a collection of plots of temperature and salinity relative frequency distributions and statistics for 5-degree squares at all standard depth levels in the Atlantic Ocean based on WORLD OCEAN DATABASE 1998 data. The area is limited to 80°N and 30°S. Volume 1 of the atlas contains seasonal distributions for the upper (0 m - 400 m) ocean. Volume 2 contains annual distributions for the depths from 500 m to 5500 m.

Atlas of the Deepwater Parts of the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone in the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Eastern Caribbean Sea. (USGS digital data series ; DDS-15).

Bathymetry of West-Central Florida (Open-file report : 99-417) West-Central Florida Coastal Studies Project in cooperation with University of South Florida and Eckerd College. Contains HTML for browsing the maps -- Bathymetry and shoreline data files -- Map plot files.

Bathymetry, sidescan sonar image, surface sediments, and surficial geological map of the inner shelf off Sarasota, Florida : preliminary discussion and GIS database release Data layers available for browsing or import into GIS applications.

Beach structures map series of West-Central Florida (Open-file report ; 99-416). HTML for browsing the maps -- Data files in ArcInfo, ASCII, and SDTS formats -- Map plot and TIFF files.

Benthic flux of dissolved nickel into the water column of South San Francisco Bay (USGS open-file report ; 01-89). Field and laboratories studies between April, 1998 and May, 1999 were conducted using sediment cores collected from South San Francisco Bay to provide initial direct measurements of dissolved-nickel flux from the sediments, and to relate those measurements to both regulated fresh-water point sources and regulated non-point sources into that component of the estuary.

Benthic habitat and faunal surveys of closed area II, central Georges Bank, 1998 and 1999 (USGS open-file report ; 01-66).

Benthic habitats of the main Hawaiian Islands Provides a benthic habitat classification manual, a benthic habitat map for the nearshore waters of the main Hawaiian Islands, and supplemental geospatial data.

Biogeographic assessment off north/central California : to support the joint management plan review for Cordell Bank, Gulf of the Farallones, and Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuaries prepared by NOAA's Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment-Biogeography Team, National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science

Bottom photographs from the Pulley Ridge deep coral reef (USGS open file report ; 2004-1228). Contains bottom photographs of the Pulley Ridge deep coral reef acquired with the USGS Woods Hole Sciene Center's SeaBOSS system. Accompanying these data are an ESRI ArcView 3.2a project file which contains navigation tracklines and points corresponding to the bottom photograph acquisition sites.

COADS global marine CD-ROM database EarthInfo's Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set global marine CD-ROM database is the most extensive collection of surface marine data available for the world ocean. It was built using the data from COADS MSTG Groups 3 and 4.

Coastal vulnerability to sea-level rise : a preliminary database for the U.S. Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf of Mexico coasts (USGS digital data series ; DDS-68). Contains information in applied coastal geology which relates to determining the physical response of the coastline to sea-level rise. HTML, PDF and ArcInfo formats.

CoastView. Vol.1, Florida Bay imagery and information Designed to help scientists understand seagrass ecological changes in the Florida Bay from the perspective of remotely sensored water imagery. Contains over 33,200 satellite images and various GIS records.

C-MAN and buoy reports and summarized elements Jointly produced by National Climatic Data Center and National Data Buoy Center, contains data, summary tables, and access software for 197 buoy and C-MAN sites managed by the National Data Buoy Center. Hourly data, including air/sea temperature, wind, pressure, wave height/period, are for the period of record through 1993.

Construction of digital bathymetry for the Gulf of Maine (Open-file report 98-801) Describes construction of 15 arc second and 30 arc second resolution bathymetric grids for Gulf of Maine. Goal was to construct best gridded products possible using available digital bathmetric data.

Deep Sea Drilling Project. Data resulting from an international study of the global oceans from 1968-1987 from 96 cruises of the D/V Glomar Challenger. Data from 624 sites drilled and cored during those cruises. Data can be searched by geographic area, leg, hole/core, or type of data.

Deep seismic reflection studies in the Pacific Northwest United States : Data visualization disc (USGS Digital data series ; DDS-16). Contains seismic data collected from southern Washington State.

Digital sidescan sonar imagery of the Manches Interiores--Manches Exteriores coral reef complex, Mayaguez, Puerto Rico (USGS open-file report ; 98-427). Types of data are high-resolution sidescan-sonar imagery (1m/pexel), textural and biological analysis of sediment samples, bathymetry, and ship tracklines. All of these data are in Arc/INFO format. Alsocontains polygon coverage representing general geologic interpretation of imagery to adequately assess significance of different sources of reef stress.

Discovery kits : educational offerings for educators and students Discovery Kits describe the basic scientific principles underlying the applied science and activities of NOAA’s National Ocean Service (NOS). Volume 1 covers corals, tides and water levels, and geodesy.

Main shock and aftershock records of the 1999 Izmit & Duzce, Turkey earthquakes (USGS Open-file report ; 01-163) Following the 7.4 earthquake in Izmit, Turkey on Aug. 17, 1999, and the 7.2 earthquake in Duzce, Turkey on Nov. 12, 1999, several organizations from Turkey, Japan, France and the USA deployed temporary ground-motion recording networks. The number of recording stations in the earthquake-affected area was quadrupled to about 130. This CD-ROM set was prepared with information contributed by eight organizations tht collected ground-motion data fro the two main events and their aftershocks. This publication contains more than 60,000 channels of data files.
