» Printed books are listed in our library catalogs. Use the guide below to find the best catalog for your needs.

» E-books (electronic books) are available online. Some are linked from our catalogs, but many more are available only through specialized websites. See our Find E-books page.

Library catalogs list books, dissertations, music recordings, scores, microfilm, videos, and other materials owned by libraries. The full text of some books is available online through library catalogs and websites.

Pathfinder (UC Berkeley)
Pathfinder is the catalog of materials in most of the 20 libraries on the UC Berkeley campus [What's included].

  • Use "Quick Search" to find books by author, title, or subject. You can also search chapter titles of many books using the Notes/Table of Contents search.
  • Use "Advanced Search" to combine two or more searches (e.g., author and title).
  • From the list of search results, click "Availability" to see if an item is checked out.
  • Note the Location; those with "Electronic Location(s)" are available online.
  • Some materials are shelved at the Northern Regional Library Facility (NRLF). Use the gray NRLF button to request.

Melvyl (all UC campuses)
Melvyl is the catalog of materials available from the libraries of the ten UC campuses, and other research collections in the state. Most of the UC Berkeley affiliated libraries' collections are included in this catalog. Current UC Berkeley students, faculty, and staff may request materials not owned by UC Berkeley through the online Request feature in Melvyl.

Next Generation Melvyl Pilot
We invite your feedback on what may become the next generation MELVYL catalog. This test system is based on WorldCat.org (see below) but has many additional features. It includes items in libraries worldwide, but gives priority to displaying items in the UC libraries. At this stage of development, not all UC materials are in the database. For more information, see our Help and Frequently Asked Questions pages.

WorldCat.org (libraries worldwide)
(alternate version: WorldCat)
Both versions of WorldCat list materials in libraries throughout the world. Current UC Berkeley students, faculty, and staff may request items not owned by UC Berkeley through the Library's Interlibrary Borrowing Service.

Individual library catalogs
To find materials in a specific library, use its own catalog. This site includes links to Bay Area, California, U.S., and other library catalogs.

Books scanned from our libraries
Two projects are scanning books from Berkeley and other UC libraries and making them available online. The Pathfinder catalog doesn't yet indicate which books have been scanned. Melvyl includes links to books scanned by Google. You can also find the scanned books through these websites:
