Welcome to the Library
Welcome to UC Berkeley, home to one of the finest research libraries in
the country. The Library includes more than twenty campus
libraries which serve a variety of academic disciplines in the arts,
humanities, social sciences, sciences, and international and area studies.
The collections of the UC Berkeley Library include over 10 million items,
including books, journals, maps, photographs, video and sound recordings, etc.
In addition to print collections, the Library also offers
an array of electronic resources.
Borrowing and Renewing Library Materials
For UCB students, your Cal 1 Card is your library card. Unregistered
students, students from other UC campuses, and visitors should visit the Library Privileges Desk (Doe Library, floor 1) to ask about borrowing policies that apply to their situation. Use library
catalogs (UCB Pathfinder, UC Melvyl) to search for all types of items in the library collections. When materials are checked out, a due
date is stamped in the back of the book that indicates the length of the
loan period (varies by library). All library materials must be returned to the library from which
they were checked out. Materials should be returned to circulation
desks during hours the library is open, and to outdoor book returns when
the library is closed. It is recommended that you sign up for e-mail notification. This enables you to receive
reminders when your materials are due, notification when borrowed materials have been recalled by another patron, or alerts when materials are being held for you. More information about borrowing privileges and responsibilities is
available online.
You can renew most books online, by telephone, and in person. To renew books online, you will need your patron
ID number (the number on your Cal 1 Card, or on your library card for non UCB students) and your four digit PIN (your birth month and day in MMDD format, or the four digit PIN you
specified at the Library Privilege Desk). If you have
problems with your PIN number, please notify the Library Privileges Desk
( email: privdesk@library.berkeley.edu | phone: 510-642-3403)
NRLF, the Northern Regional Library Facility, is the off-site shelving
facility for UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, and UC San Francisco.
It houses less frequently used materials. In Pathfinder, items at NRLF will have a icon. Clicking on it will initiate a request for the item to be returned to campus for use (generally within 48 hours).
Searches, Recalls and Holds
Students may initiate a search for an item that is not checked out and not found in its call number location on the library shelf. Searches must be placed at the circulation desk of the library that houses the item. Students will be
notified by postcard of the status of the search request (one to two
weeks).
With such heavily-used collections, there may be times when needed materials are checked out. For most items, you can place a recall request at any circulation desk. To do so, you will need to supply the call number of the item
needed. When
a recalled item is returned, it will be put on hold for you. You will be notified by postcard or e-mail (generally within 7-10 working days). If more than one person has
recalled the same item, requests will be handled in the order they were received.
If an item you have checked out is recalled, you must return it by the new
due date.
Course Reserves
Faculty may select books, articles, and other materials to place "on
reserve" for students enrolled in a specific course. To search for a specific title on reserve, or materials on reserve for a specific class, see the guide to searching for course reserves.
Interlibrary Borrowing
In addition to materials available on the Berkeley campus,
students can search the UC library catalog, Melvyl, to locate items UCB does not own, which can be borrowed from the other UC campuses. Items from other UC campuses, as well as items they have deposited
in NRLF, can be delivered to campus for your use. In the Melvyl record for the item, use the Request feature.
Items not available in UC libraries can
be requested via Interlibrary Borrowing
forms. Many other library catalogs,
such as WorldCat, list materials which you can
request be sent to campus for your use.
Library Tours and Workshops
To get familiar with specific libraries and library research skills that are useful in all disciplines (research
tools and techniques for locating specific types of materials, bibliographic management software, etc.), consider taking a library tour or attending one of the library workshops
offered throughout the year.
Reference Assistance
Reference assistance is individualized help in locating materials on a
topic and navigating the print/online collections of the library system. In-person assistance, phone, e-mail, and chat reference are available. To learn more about these services and their hours, visit the Library's research help page.
The Research Advisory
Service offers one-on-one personalized guidance for UCB undergraduates writing term papers, or who are engaged in research
projects for their humanities, social sciences, or international and area
studies classes. During peak periods of the semester, undergraduates may
sign up for a same day, half-hour appointment with a reference specialist
at the Doe Reference Desk (Floor 2). Follow above link for details.
Study Areas
Individual carrels and group study spaces are available throughout the
Library. Some locations offer Ethernet and wireless access to the
Internet, while other locations are designated for quiet study.
Copying and Printing
Campus libraries provide a variety of copying and printing services. UCB students may purchase discount
copy cards (10 cents per page for photocopies, 13 cents per page for printing from Library workstations). Discount cards may be
purchased from the Library Copy Center, 321 Moffitt Library; Boalt Copy
Service, 238 Boalt Hall; and Valley Life Science Copy Center, 2101 VLSB.
For more information and services visit the Copying and Printing page.
Computers in the Library
Computers with access to
library resources and the Internet are available in all campus libraries.
Some locations have special resources or conditions of use (such as
requiring entry of a CalNet ID for full Internet access). To print, you
will need a copy card which can be
purchased in many library locations. The Library does not provide access
to word processing software, though Microsoft Word and standard desktop applications are available in campus computer labs (such as the Moffitt Microcomputer
Facility).
Wireless access, via the campus service AirBears, is available in many
campus libraries. UCB students with a CalNet ID are eligible to
use this free service. Wireless cards are
available for one-day checkout at the Moffitt Library Circulation Desk and
the Public Health Library.
Off-Campus Access to Library Resources
Current UCB students can connect to online
library resources from off campus. Read Connecting from Off Campus and Database
Conditions of Use for more information.
Library Prize
To recognize exceptional undergraduate work, students in all
disciplines may apply for the Library Prize for Undergraduate Research. The
Library Prize recognizes excellence in research projects that evidence significant inquiry using the library and its resources, and/or evidence significant learning about the research and information-gathering process.
Student Jobs at the Library
There are a variety of student jobs available in over twenty of the UCB libraries, including the Doe (Main) Library, Moffitt, Bancroft, and East Asian Libraries. The Library employs approximately 700 students at any given time (hiring Work Study and non-Work Study students, and students with or without previous Library experience). Current job openings are posted on the bulletin board outside of rm.110 Doe Library.
Policies for Library Users
The Library Code of Conduct
and Library Computer Use Policy
detail standards for Library use intended to create a safe and pleasant
research environment for all Library patrons.
The Library is responsible for safeguarding the confidentiality of a
borrower's transactions, as mandated by the California Information
Practices Act of 1977. Please see the Library's Privacy Policies for more information.
